Is your business growth not doing what you hoped it would? This happens in many cases and for various reasons. In some situations, businesses find themselves stuck without any idea what could be holding them back.

Business Growth and Limitations

Many factors affect business growth. As a business owner, it is your job to ensure each cause receives the necessary attention so that you can overcome any obstacles and work toward achieving success. The following are some examples of ways your business may be struggling.

You do not know what you are spending. Do you know your investment each year or day? From the big things, like managing people expenses to the little things like switching to online faxing because it is less expensive, address concerns based on dollars and cents.

Are you working your people in their best place and in a receptive environment? Sometimes, employees will hold back a company when they cannot do their job effectively. Find out what the problems are and address those concerns.

Limited capital is another way that some businesses find themselves no longer growing. Buying new inventory, expanding into other markets and keeping up with the competition is pricy and hard to do overall.

By addressing business concerns, the owner can find ways to fix those concerns. This translates into more profit in the long-term. Determine where your business is struggling and make changes to boost your bottom line or at least to give the business the room it needs to grow successfully.

A lot of businesses think they can’t afford to hire the best possible employees out there. Unfortunately, far too often the very idea that they can’t afford something is what keeps them at a lower level than their business could be at. When a business maintains a mindset of scarcity, it keeps them from exploring their full potential.

Simply put, you can always afford the very best. The question to consider generally comes out best as how can you afford to hire the best. When you think about it, how can you not hire the best people possible when you have something that needs to be done? After all, the best workers in any discipline won’t end up costing you money but making it for you. While a lot of small business owners only see the costs involved in taking on additional employees, hiring great people means you hire those who will help your business to grow stronger.

Affording the best people means that in your mind you have already made an amount of money that will allow you to pay for the salaries and benefits of every new person you intend to hire on. When you focus on being wealthier instead of poorer, you not only can hire these people but must hire them. After all, hiring mediocre employees will only make your business turn into one more boring, okay company instead of the money making machine you’ve always dreamt of having. Now how can you afford the best?

The position “financial specialist” can have an unclear job description. You may be looking into becoming the financial specialist of a small business, which can be a straightforward process. In order to become a financial specialist for a big company, however, the road is varied and takes many steps.

A financial specialist is anyone who is involved in directing or planning a company’s financial goals or directions. This could mean anything from preparing an investment plan for the company’s resources to deciding what type of installment loans to use to grow the business. No matter what the situation, a financial specialist will be involved in making sure that the money aspect is handled properly.

Most financial specialists who work for a big company have a lot of training and education. These are people who start off doing the bookkeeping for small businesses and work their way up to CFO positions within the company. They have shown a keen ability to make the most of a company’s money. In effect, they have used money more efficiently than their counterparts.

If you are interested in being a financial specialist, you will need education and a lot of experience. Even if you are just going to take on the role in your small business, it’s best to have some classes under your belt so you have a basic understanding of how to make the most of your company’s money. It will pay off for you and your business.

LRG Clothing has become one of the most recognizable names in the world of fashion. No label has been more progressive or more popular throughout the last decade and it’s due, in large part, to it’s founder and visionary Jonas Bevacqua.

Bevacqua was a skateboarder and a hip hop fan himself, just a young man looking at what was happening in the world of these circles. It’s a common occurrence in the most circles that the styles start off as something new and unique and eventually become as conformed to a norm as anything else.

But with Bevacqua, the game was going to change. What he did was begin thinking outside the box. The goal was simple: how do you take what is already progressive and make it more so? This is when he came up with the idea of LRG clothing. This would be the start of a movement called “ridiculous swagger.”

So Bevacqua, who was working at a parking lot, met Mr. Wright, a DJ with some experience in hip hop clothing and decided to take his talents to and bring them together. What happened next was a company that started in 1999 was worth an estimated $150 million by 2006. It was one of the fastest growing companies in the world.

LRG continues to bring its brand of swagger to clothes and push the limits of fashion. They realized that fashion isn’t supposed to be stagnant. If you are not moving ahead you are falling far behind.

In uncertain economic times, business owners may put a freeze on hiring new employees in order to reduce expenses. In the worst-case scenario, they may feel pressure to downsize. While it may help balance the books, it may not always be the best thing for the health of the business.

Reducing the size of the workforce means that fewer employees are left to perform the work. As positions and responsibilities are consolidated, the remaining employees may become overburdened, stressed, and generally resentful of the added workload. This resentment is magnified if the extra work is not accompanied by additional pay.

Image via Wikipedia

When employees are unhappy and feel that they are taken advantage of or exploited, they typically begin searching for new jobs. Replacing these employees can be costly, especially if they have many years of experience and long-term relationships with customers.

Hiring during a slow economy may actually be the optimal time. When unemployment is high, there are more people looking for work. They may also be willing to work for a lower wage than they normally would in order to avoid unemployment. This can result in the opportunity to add to the staff at a significant cost savings.

Remember that slow economic times never last. When the economy improves, employees will feel more confident and search for new jobs. Employees that are happy and feel appreciated will stick with an employer who treated them well during the difficult times. It is to an employer’s advantage to retain valuable employees, and to hire new ones in order to keep the workload balanced and to keep good employees from burning out.

Forex is a popular method of making money, if you are a trader. Investors can do well if they have a system to help them, some experts say. The key is to know which system is going to be the best option. With more and more companies coming into the market promising to offer the best system possible, it can be confusing to know which route to take.

Picking a Forex Trading System

When choosing to trade forex online, it is critical to know your style of trading. If you are investing for your business and hoping to turn a larger profit, know the ins and outs of market trading. The following tips can help you make the right decisions.

The best system offers automation. It does the work for you so that you do not have to sit at your desk making decisions. It will help you to put a process into place and then watch the profits come in, hopefully.

Look at the testing and profit margins associated with the process. In other words, you want to see the back-testing of the system to see if it is effective. In addition to this, look for live testing as well, which allows you to see the system working in current market conditions.

The most popular systems are also able to give you access to data and will analyze that data from historical figures. Since this market is cyclical, there are benefits to analyzing the historic data to make decisions now.

All of this information can help you to make the right decisions to manage your forex trading systems and profit goals.

Some are now realizing it may be a good time to expand.
Making the Decision to Expand

To expand your business, realize the opportunities available to do so. What you may not realize is that now can be an ideal time to expand since you can find a variety of savings along the way.

If you are leery about opening another shop or not interested in spending the money to hire a lot of people just yet, try to move online. Small businesses online are growing and are in demand. Reach more people without spending a lot of money.

Consider the profit potential of expanding now. If you need to borrow money to start a business, now is a good time to do that, too. Interest rates are low and loans are available.

The cost of many aspects of doing business are less expensive right now. This includes marketing, hiring people, wages and overall benefits packages. This may be an incentive to invest now.

Talk to a financial planner about the options available to you to expand in the current market climate. You may find that there are new opportunities for your business to do well right now, even though the economic climate may not be the best it has ever been at. For many, this just means opportunity.

In today’s competitive business world, customer service and good business etiquette can be the competitive edge your company needs to beat the competition. It seems that today’s generation of young business people are lacking the skills to properly communicate with management, customers and co-workers. There are certain guidelines that need to be followed in order to really convince anyone you are a contender. These rules may change from culture to culture and in some cases, industry to industry.

Imagine what kind of income you could generate if you became the person who helps a company make the leap from middle of the pack to the leader of the pack. Becoming a business etiquette consultant is a great career choice because good manners are a great asset for any serious company. If you’re scratching your head and wondering how to do this, think about checking out some online courses. While the business etiquette profession may be supported in traditional universities, many online learning outlets can help you get the skills you need to become a corporate trainer.

You’ll be doing more than teaching people which fork to use at a business dinner. You’ll also be helping with self-confidence, proper business attire, global ethics and customs, and good people skills. Many young business people come into the work place sounding like a surfer. It was cool in college and high school, but it will turn a manager or customer off. Imagine! You can get paid to teach a young man to say “yes” instead of “yeah.” You’ll be a professional who teaches professionalism.

The world of finance is a very complicated thing. On the one hand, you have the people who are so obsessed with security that they end up sitting on a million dollars and thinking a one percent savings account rate is great. But on the other hand, you have the people who think next month is too far away to plan for, and who usually have less than two paychecks worth of savings anywhere. Neither of these kinds of situations is the ideal, but you have to talk to both of them or watch them suffer later on.

For the super savers, some of the best advice is to tell them to think of a payday loan. They will likely scoff at the idea, because they would have to pay interest on such a thing. Then come in with the idea that they can make more from their money by taking on the risk of lending to others in the same way. It seems a little bit less risky when you only take a small portion of your savings to use for more speculative ventures like that.

For the super spenders, you have to take the opposite route. For them, investing in the latest sexy scheme sounds like a great idea, as well as a great way to get on track after their most recent, dramatic and bankruptcy-inducing problem sucked their bank account dry. In this case, automating their savings and investments is the best thing you can possibly do for them. This is on par with locking an obese person in a gym or sending a hypochondriac off to fight in a desperate war.

In order for any company to stay in the proverbial “black” they need to adopt a strategy of forward thinking. Part of that kind of thinking should also incorporate the “out of the box” variety. In other words, where could you possibly find new customers? Believe it or not, a viable source of additional revenue could be found through earning a government contract. Yes, there is a lot of talk about budget cutting and deficits, but the fact remains that our government is still open for business. Could some of that business come your way? It’s quite possible.

If you haven’t checked out the Small Business Administration yet you should. They have many resources available for you to tap into that can help improve your bottom line. One such resource is their Business Matchmaking Program. This is where they provide the bridge between companies and new potential buyers. As you can imagine, anything to do with the government is going to require a stack of forms and paperwork to fill out. This shouldn’t discourage you, but instead encourage. Keep in mind that other companies are feeling the same level of pain. That means if you push through you might just be the last company standing!

Another way to beef up your profit potential is to consider a merge with another company. Recently there were two competing satellite radio companies: Sirius and XM. They were knocking themselves out to try and win over customers. The solution? A merger that melded their programming and their customer base. Overnight they became the only game in town jumped to an impressive 20 million new listeners. You might not approach that success, but you’ll never know until you try!

There is a lot to be said for being the best at one thing. After all, you only need one solid hit in business to set you up for life. Ask the maker of the Barbie Doll or the hula hoop. However, savvy business owners know that to stay competitive, you need to diversify. For every Barbie there was also a G.I. Joe and Mr. Potato Head. For every hula hoop there was a slinky and a Frisbee. Any small business operator should have an answer to the question, “what else have you got” standing by. You never know who you might run into in an elevator!

Some businesses offer a specific service like carpet cleaning. That’s what they do and they make a good living at that. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t diversify. If you’re cleaning someone’s carpet, the addition of an outdoor power hose could open up a new line of business of scrubbing decks and patios. You could even set up package deals for the inside and outside of a home. A store that specializes in selling running shoes for the serious runner could also stock running outfits, water bottles, socks and even sport theme sun block. In other words what can you add to your line of goods or services that will let you expand the potential for profit.

Perhaps you’ve reached the limit of what you can offer. What about offering yourself? As an operator of a successful small business you’ve obviously have some valuable insights that many folks could benefit from. Maybe there is a local learning center that would be interested in a course taught by you. That’s taking diversifying to an entirely new level!

Businesses are set up for two reasons: To sell goods or offer services. There are many businesses that end up offering their services for the goods they sell. Talk about cornering the market! If you’ve created a product that has found a modicum of success then you might consider taking that product to the next level by licensing that product to a larger manufacturer. This isn’t about giving up your idea, but about getting the opportunity to have that idea reach a global market.

Most of the products in your home are actually licensed products. Someone came up with an idea for a vacuum cleaner, ballpoint pen or even a potato chip that improved on what was out in the market. What this unique product lacked was marketing muscle and production cash. When you license your product to an established corporation then you’re entering into a partnership with very little risk to you. Your new licensing partner should be putting up the bulk of any necessary marketing or manufacturing costs. In return, they will get a piece of the profits from the sales of your product.

Setting up a licensing deal is like forming a new business alliance. Some folks come up with that one great idea, license it and then just sit back to collect the royalty checks. Others want to stay in the business with further development and expansion of the original product line. Either way is a viable option. Also, make sure you’ve got a good lawyer on your side to review the license contracts. There have been too many horror stories of inventors losing out. Don’t let that be you!

One of the most powerful business tools you have at your disposal is staring right back at you: The Internet. As you read this article, the potential exists that hundreds, if not thousands, if not millions of people are reading it as well. They all have the same access. Now imagine if you could reach that same level of active users through your own business website? That would be impressive on anyone’s business ledger. The issue at hand is whether or not your web site can reach out to this millions of potential new customers.

This is where the idea of partnering with other business entities comes into play. If you can cross promote your goods with a company that has comparable goods then you stand a reason to both benefit. Suppose you have a mail order business selling bulk candy. What if you partnered up with a website that sold Halloween costumes? Candy and Halloween go hand in hand. That’s just one example. There are many more possibilities that could be right around the virtual corner.

Naturally, expanding your business globally means your website has to be user friendly in many different languages. That’s just a matter of programming. Once a customer discovers your website, you want to make their viewing experience engaging enough so they’ll come back, even if it is just to browse around. That comes down to the issue of fresh content. How often are you updating your web site? Does your design feel fresh?

Another component you should consider is allowing customers to express themselves. If the internet has taught us one thing it’s that everyone has an opinion they are desperate to share. Setting up a way for customers to interact with one another and share their own experiences can help broaden your company’s reach. Go for the gold by going global!

A popular new reality show gives start up entrepreneurs the chance to get a cash infusion for their businesses, but first that need to survive the “Shark Tank.” In this show, a panel of successful business folks are willing to put their own money on the line for an idea they feel can be marketed in a big way. Not everyone with a solid business idea will make it onto the “Shark Tank”, but that doesn’t mean you can’t develop you own marketing strategies. The goal is to share your home base business with the rest of the world.

There was a time when Sears cornered the mail order business by annual issues of their catalogue. Now those catalogues have been replaced by websites. So, how strong is your internet presence? The website for your business will be the first impression you potential customers will make about your company. Are the products displayed and written about in an engaging manner? Is it easy to order items? Does the website add fresh content? Those are all key components for any business that wants to market their product globally.

One successful path to growing your home business is finding compatible partners. These are companies whose customers might benefit from your product. For instance, if you are in the business of making uniquely colored shoelaces then you need to get with a sneaker company. If a Google search can help customers find your company then it can also help you research other businesses that would be a good fit for your expansion.

Just because you’ve got an awesome website for your company doesn’t mean you can stop there. There many more avenues to explore on the web to get the word out on your product. By targeting other social networks you can build strong brand recognition and profit.

It was at the age of 40 when Colonel Sanders first began selling his famous fried chicken. However, he wasn’t selling this chicken from a KFC restaurant. Instead, the Colonel was offering his special recipe fried chicken to customers at his gas station. Soon, more people were coming for the chicken and not the gas. At that point, Sanders had a decision to make: Should he expand his business? Fortunately for those of us who enjoy the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, Sanders moved his chicken business to a café and a new fast food was born.

Is it time for you to expand your business? If you have a traditional “brick and mortar” type operation that is achieving a consistent level of success, then it might make sense to open a second location. Just as you prepared for your first opening, this expansion should follow the same rules. You should put together a complete business plan. You’ll also need to do your research about picking the perfect second location spot. Most importantly, you should consider what kind of strain opening a second location might have on your current business. Once all of those factors have been weighed and signs point to a “yes” then expansion could be in your future.

Another great lesson to take from Colonel Sanders is what happened when his first restaurant failed. Yes, it’s true, Colonel Sanders’ first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant failed when an interstate project drove away all his foot traffic. Instead of accepting failure, the Colonel decided it was time to branch out and franchise his chicken business. He toured the country with his special fryer and seasonings to show burgeoning fast food entrepreneurs how they could get into business for themselves. Of course, the Colonel got a piece of every franchise operations. Maybe your business is also ready to become franchise!

You likely started a business to pursue a personal passion. That is the true beauty of entrepreneurship; you come up with your own ideas and bring them to life. However, all entrepreneurs are not natural-born leaders. Along with other necessary business traits, such as sound accounting skills, the life of your business depends on effective leadership skills. Every team needs a leader to help keep them driven and focused. If you cannot lead your workforce, then your employees will not be as effective. As a result, your sales will not be as profitable.

One of the most important things to relay to your team is enthusiasm. If you are not an enthusiastic leader, then how can you expect your team to exhibit enthusiasm? Your attitude will always affect the way your business turns out. Customers want to deal with businesses that are confident and warm, not ones that are unenthusiastic and unsure of why they are there. Keep the workplace fun but still professional. Everyone should understand their purpose in your business.

Communication is an essential trait of an effective leader. Constantly keep in touch with your employees. Talk to them on a daily basis, especially if you are there at the place of business. If you operate multiple businesses, then keep in touch on a weekly basis at the bare minimum.

Recognize success just as much as down-falls. As a leader keeping tabs on a business as well as the people who make it happen, it is easy to get caught up in the mistakes. If you are constantly pointing out others’ mistakes, you will come across as nagging and pessimistic. This decreases morale in your team. For these reasons, it is vital that you point out the great work that your employees do. Not only will this make them feel valued, but you are helping to set an example so that other employees can follow suit.

As a business owner, it takes a lot of trust to let someone else run your business. But this is inevitable, especially as your business continuously grows. Adding managers to your team also helps give you the personal time you need away from your business so that you can return refreshed each day you are at the office.

Finding appropriate managers can be a big task. This is especially the case if you are hiring from outside of the company. Every business owner looks for similar traits in their managers: passion, trustworthiness, a good work ethic, enthusiasm, leadership, and experience. Once you have found the perfect manager, you cannot just leave it at that and be on your way. No one is perfect, and even managers can sometimes fall off the bandwagon.

Every team needs a leader, and you cannot always be around. The leadership role is then the responsibility of your management team. A leader always sets the tone of the business. If a manager is having an “off” day, then your employees may also be down. Everyone has their bad days, and this type of scenario has a quick turn-around. However, the danger is that customers do not get into the buying spirit if they are in a depressing place of business.

In more serious situations, managers might become disgruntled. They often share their misery with other employees, causing backlash against the company. This is potentially dangerous, since again, their attitudes directly affect the customers.

Avoid negative impacts on your business by keeping in constant communication with your managers. Touch base one-on-one at least once a week. Also reward your managers for hard work and great accomplishments. This will keep up the morale and decrease the chances of discontent with the job. Finally, if another employee raises concerns about a particular manager, listen closely and do your own investigations. Talk to your manager and see what can be done to improve the situation. If your manager does not wish to improve, then it is time that you both parted ways professionally.

As a business owner and manager, it is important that you inject an atmosphere of friendliness and teamwork within your business. It is normal to chat with employees and to get to know one another. There is a long-held belief that personal matters should stay out of the workplace. This holds true for employer-employee relationships. There are reasons to justify this stance:

You might make your employees feel uncomfortable. A story to share with your closest friends may not sit well with an employee, particularly if you don’t know him on the same level as your friends.

Your employee might spread gossip. When talking about your personal life, it is easy to let things slip. Although a piece of information might seem harmless to you, it can turn into something big. For example, think of what could blow out of proportion if you tell an employee that you drank too much that weekend. Unfortunately, it is a part of human nature to talk and to share news about each other.

Your stories might be offensive. Your business is likely dynamic and diverse. You should keep your small talk G-rated in order to avoid any type of backlash.

A disgruntled employee might turn other employees against you.

So what can you do to maintain the friendliness in your place of business without crossing the line? First and foremost, your focus should be work. It is okay to get to know your employees and talk, but do not take it too far. At the same time, if you notice an employee being too gossipy, seek her out and talk to her about it. It is best to address any type of job dissatisfaction directly with the employee before it gets out of control and affects the atmosphere of the whole business.

Advertising is an important part of your business. Although you might have customers now, you constantly need to reach out for new ones. Let’s face it: your current customer pool doesn’t likely purchase goods or services from you on a daily basis. Advertising also plays a role in keeping your customers interested and excited about your business.

The confusion begins once you decide how and where to advertise. There are several venues to choose from for different markets. Different types of advertising also vary in costs, with business cards being the cheapest and television ads being the most expensive. Here is a breakdown of different types of advertising and what they entail:

Business cards. These are useful to pass out to potential customers and to give to your current customers so they can share information with friends. Depending on how fancy you get, a pack of 500 cards can range from $20 to $150.

Yellow pages. These are hit-and-miss unless your customer is specifically looking for your service. No target market reads the yellow pages front to back. These are more appropriate for specialized businesses. Examples might be a wedding boutique or a pediatrician.

Magazine and newspaper ads. These run a set amount of time. You can choose between different sizes and colors, and perhaps even page placement at an additional cost. Newspaper ads are the least likely to capture attention unless you run it every single day.

Radio advertising. This is expensive and is becoming more outdated as more people are using satellite radio and different forms of media to play music. Many radio ads yell at their targets in hopes of getting their attention. If this is not how you want to be portrayed, you may want to skip it.

Television advertising. The most expensive, with ads ranging between 15 and 30 seconds long. Not only do you have to pay a company to help you create the ad, but you also have to pay to air it. Television ads are not for newbie business owners on a tight budget.

Word-of-mouth: free and based on excellent customer care.

As the economy is slowly on the rebound, you may have found that production has increased in your business, whether in the form of services or goods. You may have even found that your business is so busy that you do not have enough employees to accommodate customers. This can be anywhere from an increase in clients, patients, and retail shoppers. It may be time to hire more employees. At the same time, this will cost you more money. There are some things to consider before expanding your team:

Can the business really afford another team member? Although you may want more employees, it is time to be realistic. Is the increased amount of people at your place of business actually purchasing what you have to sell?

Consider the amount of people you want to hire and plug in the numbers. Calculate potential salaries, 401k sharing, paid time off, and benefits.

Is the influx in business seasonal? Does customer volume increase during the summer or winter? If this is the case, you might consider hiring seasonal or temporary employees to help cover the workload. Keep in mind that you should tell potential employees this before they are hired.

Finally, it is important to figure out what having more employees means in terms of your bottom line. Some business owners are concerned about quick profits to turn their business around. If this is the case, you might need to stick it out with the employees you do have until you make enough money to get out of the hole and have enough profits to expand your personnel.

If you do have the money and do not want to spend it on hiring other people, consider this: will not having enough employees impact customer satisfaction? If the answer is yes, then you will potentially lose customers for future business. The point of a business is to profit, but you cannot accomplish this without happy customers.

Business cards have a history in Europe and in Asia as method of introducing yourself and others. United States business owners started utilizing cards during the late 1800s as a method of advertising. Today, cards are used as a way to introduce yourself, and also as a keepsake for a potential customer. Given the nature of business cards, it is easy to understand why there are so many types of cards. The standard, plain 3 x 2 card simply does not stand out anymore. However, before you buy 1,000 glossy double-sided cards, consider whether this investment will have a return in revenue for your business.

Business cards are essential for those that are selling goods and services. A basic card lists your name, business location, phone number, and perhaps a website or e-mail address. There are different finishes you can choose. A basic white paper stock is the least expensive, and perhaps the most practical if you are just starting out or hand out dozens of business cards a day. You can also choose a matte or glossy finish to your cards. You can even add text and art to both sides of the card. Keep in mind that such editions will double or even triple the cost of business cards. Glossy finishes and double-sided cards are also difficult for your customers to write additional information on, unless they happen to carry a sharpie marker with them.

There are websites that offer free standard business cards so long as you pay shipping. If you go to a store, you are likely to get better quality cards. A pack of 1,000 cards can range between $50 and $200, depending on what features you use.

business owner should have some type of business card. Not only does it make you appear professional, but the information is handy for customers. The issue should not be whether you should have business cards, but rather what type. If you want to stand out from the competition, have the most creative card your budget can allow you. Remember to purchase only what you can afford.

In a globe that is as commercially-based as ours, it can also be very interesting for one to have one business or the other that you will also be managing. If you are even fortunate enough, you can nurture your business to maturity. If you are able to do this, then you will be compared to the great entrepreneurs of the world like Warren Buffett, John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie and the likes. In this regard and considering the achievements of these great men, not a few people will also want to be entrepreneurs. This is a dream that can come to fruition, to be a great entrepreneur is a height anyone can aspire to.

To become an entrepreneur, and not an ordinary one but an outstanding one at that, there are some things that you must know. The very first thing that most entrepreneurs will tell you is that to succeed in the business world, then you must have a product or service that you will offer the people. The more relevant, unique and useful your products are, then the brighter your chances of succeeding at any business that you do.

Apart from having a product that you can sell, another thing that can make you survive and succeed in the business world is that you must have excellent networking abilities. Such a tremendous ability to network and have links with many people across the world is one thing that will help you spread the message concerning your products and brand and this will help you expand your base and pool of potential clients. And this is important considering the fact that it is these clients that will pay you the money, from which you derive your own profits. Thus, it will be in your own interest to treat them well.

It is quite easy and interesting to see that our world that revolves around business. If you doubt this, even though there is no basis for denying something that is this obvious, then it is either you are being mischievous, funny or simply under-estimating the power and influence of business. The number of businesses that are spread all over the globe cannot be counted. It is also interesting to know that the richest individuals in the world are those that have been long established in one business or the other. This brings into mind the likes of Bill Gates of the United States, Mukesh Ambani of India, Lilian Bettencourt of France and Aliko Dangote of Nigeria and some other billionaires that have been in the business for various lengths of time.

However, it is important to know that it is not all entrepreneurs that make the millions of profit when they do business. There are also some business executives that have suffered for long before they made the huge profits that have made them the mega rich that they are today. As a matter of fact, there are so many pitfalls that entrepreneurs have to face in business before becoming quite successful, even though some of them do not recover from such pitfalls.

At this point, it is important and imperative that these pitfalls be discussed so that important lessons can be learnt. One of the commonest pitfalls that one can come across in the world of business is to fall a victim of fraud and inexperience. For some many business executives, they have many tales of fraud that they have to tell, especially as at the time that they started their businesses. Not a few entrepreneurs have lost huge sums to the activities of fraudsters. Another thng that business people have to cope with are losses.

A lot of people go into doing one business or the other to improve the quality of their lives. They do this by using the profits that accrue from their business for other useful ventures. Afterall, one of the most important, if not the most important purpose of capitalism is to make profits. You can only forget about making profits if your business is a humanitarian not-for-profit charitable organization. However, for the majority of other entrepreneurs out there, it is all about making profit. Even though business executives know the importance and value of profits, not all of them are making enough, thus they are looking for ways to increase their profit margins.

Because it can be a really frustrating experience for a business executive to keep making little or no profits, it is important that we discuss the ways on how to increase your profit. One very good way to do this is to ensure that you minimize the cost of production and administration in your organization, what this simply means is you must find ways of using cost-effective methods in your phases of production. Once the overhead cost of production of a company is reduced, then the profit margin is increased.

Apart from minimizing the cost of production, another thing that can be done on your part is to utilize the power of advertizing. With strategic advertizing, you will be able to spread the message of your brand and products to millions and possibly billions of potential customers all over the globe. Once you are able to expand the pool of your potential customers, you will observe a boost in sales and that means that your profits are increasing. In addition, another tactic that you can ensure it to ensure the loyalty of your customers. It has been observed that long-standing customers contribute to the profits of an organization.

Being a small business owner in the United States requires trending through uncertain waters in difficult economic times. The ability to borrow money used to be the lifeblood of small businesses, but that ability evaporated with the collapse of financial markets in 2008. The powerful banks that once existed as a utility to turn on the faucet of small businesses no longer had the means or the desire to give businesses the capital they required. Rather than question the purpose of the banks in the wake of this development, the Federal Government seemed to side with the major banks rather than support small business owners. Small business owners did not respond to this development by scaling back on their dreams.

The hopes and desires of owning a small business might no longer be tied to a bank loan due to the collapse of credit markets, but innovation can still exist despite the lack of fertile fields to start a new business. Rather than rely on large banks, small business owners began to self fund or turn to other means of incubating their endeavors. One of the fastest and most efficient ways for small business owners to acquire capital is though pay day loans. Companies like Payday One might be viewed as only a consumer company by many observers, but in a new credit crunched environment Payday One is more than just a way for consumers to pay their pills when few other options exist.

Getting funding is the key to survival for most businesses. Hiring a new worker or getting a key advertising spot might require money that the initial investors could not provide. Even in the midst of a large bank credit crunch there are ways for small business owners to get the liquidity necessary to build a presence in almost any market. Payday loans are not just for the consumer market. For small business owners, payday loans can be a life saver.

In different parts across the globe, it is common for one to see that various businesses are blooming all over. These businesses are of various sizes and reach, but the important thing is that they generate profit in one way or the other. As a matter of fact, our world is now one that can be compared to one vast market where billions of people do the business of buying and selling. If you observe closely, you will also see that you are also a buyer or seller, or maybe both. However, when the word business is mentioned, it is common for many people to assume that it must be an organization that has an office, maybe with branches in different locations, a heaquarters with a retinue of staff to run the show. That is the stereotypical view that a lot of people have with business.

However, this is the 21st century and things are definitely not the same as they were in the past. A lot of things have changed, especially in the business world. Today, you do not need to have millions to set up an office, furnish it and start you own business. As a matter of fact, there are many businesses that you can do with little or no start-up capital. But the best part of the deal is that you are your own boss and you even work from the comfort of your home without the threat of any employer firing you.

One of such businesses is for you to set up a travel agency and use your own house as the office. If you think that is too difficult, then you need to procure a computer system (either a desktop or laptop) complete with Internet access and the whole world is at your feet as there are many freelancing business online.

In our world today, virtually every activity that we carry out as human beings are always aimed at our survival, yes it is always about how to survive. Once you have this at the back of your mind, then you will understand why billions of people all over the globe have decided to do one business or the other.

Commercial activities have always been integral components of the human society, just as scientists and historians tell us that our ancestora that lived thousands of years ago were also business people even though the mode of transaction and the volume of business were different from what obtains today. Even with the obvious importance of business, there are some who feel that there is no need for them to have any business of their own. If you belong to this school of thought, then this piece is written for you.

A lot of people do not go into business for various reasons. Some believe that they are financially secure and they do not have to undergo the stresses of business while some others believe that business is just a risk that they are not willing to undertake. However, even if you are in a job that pays very well, there is still need for you to do one business or the other. You need to invest some of that fat salary of yours in a business that will cater for you when you retire and there is no salary to support you. If you feel you do not have the time and stamina to monitor the business, you can hire professionals that will do that for you.

Also, if you feel that business is too risky for you to venture in, it is important for you to know that everything in life is all about risk, and if you stand for nothing, then you will fall for nothing as well.

It has been said time and time again that this century is one of science and technology. Well, this is a very valid statement and one that reflects the real state of the modern scoiety. In the 21st century, one can hardly think of an area of the human life that is not influenced in one way or the other by the marauding forces of science and technology, this is the fact of the day and it is most likely going to remain like that for a very long time to come. Still talking on science and technology, one of the most useful and important inventions ever crafted by man is the Internet. This vast connection of computer systems around the globe has given a new definition to the concept of living.

The Internet is now so useful and important that you ignore it to your own advantage. Even though some people can afford to do their activities without resorting to the Interne, there are some professionals that neglecting the Internet is tantamount to business collapse or fading into professional oblivion. For this category of people, they have no other choice but to be connected to the Internet every hour of the day. In fact, for some of them, the Internet itself is the office, and even the business itself. In case you are wondering those that will be in this category, then you should not bother yourself any more as these are the business executives.

The stupendous growth and development of many business across the globe can be directly attributed to the use of the Internet, the businesses of finance, commerce and trade are very good illustrations in this case. Commercial banks all over the world now do business with clients all over the world using the Internet. Entrepreneurs and business moguls also depend heavily on the Net for resources and even meetings.

All over the world, thousands of business spring up everyday in different locations on the globe. At the same time, countless business collapse in various places as well. This pattern is not a strange one and it is one of the unchangeable laws and principles of nature, and it is one that is even applicable to us as human beings. For example, thousands of babies are born everyday while thousands of people also lose their lives on the same day. It is a way that nature uses to strike a balance in the system and order of things. Therefore, it is common to see that there are times that even with the best practices available, a business can still collapse due to reasons that may not be entirely explicable, while in some other cases it can still be explained either due to theft, fire, embezzlement, government clampdown or an economic recession. However, there are measures that you can employ to cope with such a situation.

In the case of a collapse of a business, one thing that you must realize is that the collapse of your business does not mean the end of the world. For some people that cannot cope with such a loss, the end of their businesses may also signify the end of their lives as some go ahead to commit suicide forgetting that when there is life there is hope. Therefore, for you to be able to think properly and fashion out workable strategies, you must clear your mind, remain cool and be positive. Even though the collapse of a business is not a pleasant experience at all, it is important to know that a positive outlook is highly beneficial in such hopeless situations.

Another step you can take to ensure damage control is to ensure that you claim your insurance in a case where you were fortunate and smart enough to have insured your business against a collapse.

The business of making fine, luxury watches was what Louis-Ulysse Chopard envisioned at the very young age of only 24. In 1860, this was a lot for a young man to take on as an entrepreneur. However, not only did Chopard embrace his vision, he also made it a huge success. In the luxury watch business there are many competitors, but Chopard has stood the test of time. Even today, people still enjoy wearing Chopard watches, as it is a symbol of fine taste, elegance and fine craftsmanship.

Fine watches were what Louis-Ulysse Chopard started out making. In 1860 when he started the brand, Chopard was known for his pocket watches and chronometers. Only a select class of society was able to afford his wares. He used his innovative ideas and creativity to manufacture the watches, making them unique. The Swiss-based luxury watch manufacturer also started out making and distributing them in-house, which remain Chopard’s manufacturing process today. By manufacturing the watches in-house, the Chopard brand is able to effectively control the manufacturing process, paying close attention to detail, overall quality and reduce additional expenses that would unnecessarily inflate the cost of the watches.

The family of the Chopard business has maintained a standard of detail and superior quality in its line of manufacturing watches. The company ships their watches to individuals and retailers all over the country, as well as maintaining an online store where consumers can purchase their products.

The Chopard watch manufacturer also has a production facility in Fleurier, which is one of the four participating locations in the Fleurier Quality Foundation. This participation signifies that the Chopard watch company has been esteemed as a high quality manufacturer of watches. The “Qualite Fleurier” designation standard is a competitive standard for the Geneva Seal manufacturing standard.

One of the most constant and important laws of nature is the law of growth. The law of growth is demonstrated at every moment and it is what turns the tiny seed into a giant oak tree, it is the law of growth that turns an infant to a father. Therefore, it is only normal and natural for a busines person to expect that his or her small business will grow into a vast business empire with branches scattered all over the world. Although ambitious, having visions of growth for one’s enterprise is always a good thing. However, one fact that cannot be debated is that even though business are so numerous nowadays that they cannot be counted, not all the business can be said to follow the law of growth, some are perpetually following the principle of retrogression.

But, because of the fact that there are people who build their businesses everyday, it simply means that you can do so to. All you need to know are the different ways to grow your own business. In this regard, one of the most important and useful tips is keeping your customers. Once you are able to garner the trust and loyalty of your customers, then all other things will fall in place. Your current customers will draw others to you whenever they are satisfied with your services.

Our planet can be described as one vast market with millions of commodities and billions of customers in a pool that is available for you to tap from. Without any sense of surprise, our world has always been a huge marketplace right from the ancient times, the only difference is that in the modern age, the trading system has become more sophisticated and so advanced that you can now make purchases with virtual money over the Internet using a plastic card, you do not have to carry a heavy bag of cowries around or agricultural produce looking for whom to exchange with. Things have really changed and it will be in your own favor to also blend with time.

But, one becomes a little bit surprised to discover that even with the billions of potential customers that lie out there waiting for you to utilize them to your own advantage, one of the biggest problems that some business executive has to deal with is the lack of customers. For some reasons, it just seems that customers prefer to avoid them. Fortunately, this is a problem that can be solved easily, you need useful tips on how to attract customers by learning from those that are more successful in the business.

One timeless strategy is that you must always know that the customer is never wrong. If you are in the habit of arguing with your customers, correcting them all the time or even abusing them, then you should not blame any body when nobody shows up to buy your goods. You need to be responsive and genuinely respectful to your clients as they are the ones that pay the bills. Another strategy that can be employed to draw customers to you is to always do a follow up. Do not just sell a commodity and assume that all is well. Always ask for the feedback of your customers to know where you can improve.

All over the globe, one cannot but be impressed with the scale of business that people are involved in. Billions of people all over the planet have one business or the other that they tend to no matter the size or capitalization base. However, even though there are billions of people that are into business, one sees that it is not every single businessperson that is successful. Some are just far more successful than the others while some others keep tottering in their business declaring losses upon losses. Therefore, it is normal for one to wonder why one businessperson keeps smiling to the bank while the other is on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. Well, for the successful business executive, there is no magic to it but there is surely a secret. This is a secret that is known to business people for thousands of years and can be regarded as the golden principle of the business world. This wonderful secret can be wrapped up in a single saying that states that the customer is always king.

For the successful business executive, manners and professional conduct are very crucial to the success of the business. Because they know that the customer is the goose that lays the golden eggs, they cannot risk losing their valued customers and thus, they ensure that they use simple business manners in attracting new customers and keeping the old ones that they have. Because these simple business manners have been shown to be very important to business, it is not out of place to discusss some of them here.

Talking of such manners when dealing with your manners, you must always endeavor that all the needs of your customers are met in a satisfactory and delightful manner. When you are rude, uncouth or impatient as a businessperson, then you are on your own.

Right from the beginning of time, humans beings have always been traders, either it was the trade by barter system of ancient Asia or the sophisticated deals on the floor of our stock exchanges, man has always been a buyer and seller. In the 21st century, not much has changed as billions of business transactions are held at various places worldwide every 24 hours. In fact, without these business activities, then there will be nothing like a global economy. The business executives, corporate professionals and entrepreneurs are very critical and important to our very survival. Even though business executive are widely regarded as making all the profits and leaving the crumbs to the rest, it must also be mentioned that there are various challenges for someone that wants to do business or someone that is even established.

Political challenges are some of the most important challenges that a business executive is left to cope with. In various nations of the world, you need the permission and express approval of the government before you can set up your own business, especially if you are a foreigner or the size of the business happens to be very large. In a case where you belong to the opposition camp of the government in power or you are suspected to be, then the government can force you out of business using various tactics or they will simply deny you the rights to even start a business. That is the reason why many business executives support the government of the day wherever they operate.

Apart from the problem that the government poses, another thing that the business has to worry about is corruption within the establishment. Workers that are corrupt, ineffective and unprofessional can wreck a mutimillion-dollar business empire. Therefore, an astute businessperson must find a way to overcome this challenge if not the business will collapse in no time.

If you’re looking for great ways to get a business started, one of the things you can consider is crowdsourcing. It’s like outsourcing, but you’ll be using a lot of people who help you just a little. It can show you a good way to get more money for your business, and it’s not just for charitable organizations. You can also get help with small businesses that way. Don’t assume that you can’t do it or that it’s not for you. Take the time to find out about it and make sure that you’re doing all the research you need to really learn about it properly. If you do that, you’ll be ready to get the help that you need and you won’t have to struggle to get people to contribute so that you can get your business off of the ground.

Sites like Microgiving allow you to seek assistance. They help charity organizations, but they also work specifically with start-up businesses. It’s a great way to raise capital, but you have to go about it right. You can’t just write a couple of lines and start asking people for money. Having a good business plan and the right idea is important. People aren’t going to give you their money – even a little bit of it – if they don’t believe in what you’re trying to accomplish. The same is true if they don’t think you’re going to do what you say you are, or if they don’t think you have the skills to handle it.

The good news is that getting help from a site like that can let good people with talent and big ideas actually get somewhere. Once you’ve built up your business, be sure to remember where you came from. That way, you’ll be more likely to give back in the future, so you can help other people in the same position. Creating more philanthropists is always a good thing.

If one is very observant in nature, one will be tempted to say that commerce is in the genes of human beings. The reasons for this are many but the most important and obvious is the nature of the businesses that we have all over the world. There is virtually no community or society in the world that you will visit and you will not find one market or the other. You will agree that most human beings have the spirit of an entrepreneur, and perhaps you are one too. No doubt, it is good to do good business, but there are times that setting up a business, even if it is a small one, does not come easy.

Therefore, at this point, it becomes imperative to share some ideas on how to set up a small business. Before you start up any business, no matter how large or small it may be in size, one thing that you must bear in mind before going into the business is that you must ensure that it is a business that you really have passion for. This is because when you are really passionate about a venture, that fire and zeal of passion will help you cope with the stress and the challenges that you will face in business. That is a very important tip.

Apart from having the zeal and interest, another thing with a small business is that you need to source for a small amount of capital that you will start the business with. In some cases, you can use your personal savings as the capital and in a case where you do not have any such savings, then you can approach a micro-credit facility or bank and apply for a loan. Once you are able to do this, all you need is a good location to market your goods.

Happy customers bring in more customers; positive word or mouth is one of the most powerful advertising tools available. But happy customers are also more likely to come back for repeat business themselves, saving you the trouble and expense of having to track down another customer to replace them.

Just like the parable of a sheep that wouldn’t join a flock because the shepherd was starving the established flock to make extravagant offers to the new prospect, your new customers will also pay careful attention to how you deal with established customers, whether online, through testimonials, or observations during in-person visits.

So the most important thing for drawing repeat business is to treat everybody — yourself, new clients, existing clients and fellow employees — with respect. You’ll feel better and your clients will notice.

Considering offering a discount for repeat business. You don’t have to implement this right away; you can use it to celebrate a special occasion, like a holiday or that client’s anniversary with your company. If you notice that a frequent customer has suddenly stopped ordering or booking your services, you can also use a discount to help lure them back for more business.

You should also ask for feedback. Many customers won’t respond to lengthy survey requests, but offering prizes — like a small account credit, or a chance at winning a larger lottery-style premium — for taking the time to fill out the survey can help motivate. Keeping the survey very short and including a short note about how you appreciate your customer’s business and would like to make the experience better for him or her can go a long way toward motivating customers to answer. You can also train your employees to ask for suggestions and feedback when appropriate.

Finally, keep in touch. A birthday card or holiday card that’s not attached to a sales pitch will make your customers feel appreciated, as opposed to just another source of money.

A lot of children are raised on the dogma of, “when you grow up, you are going to work for a great company.” So when they grow up, they seek out a job working for a solid company, so as to avoid all of the risks associated with “failure.” So they spend their entire lives trying their best to always work for a good company (often changing companies a couple of dozen times), and avoiding anything that looks too risky to them. Of course, they always risk the fact that their lives are not under their own control when they work for someone else. Or perhaps that is less of a risk, and more of a guarantee that they are under someone else’s thumb.

There is an alternative to working for a great company. You may also own a great company. The down side to this is, unless you happen to have been born rich (and thus really don’t especially need to work for your income), you are going to have to build the great company you intend to own. There are going to be startup costs, there will be a whole lot of times where you wonder why you ever signed on to do something that feels so completely crazy… and then, there are also going to be times when it all feels worthwhile. Like when you take it public and become a multimillionaire faster than a lottery winner.

Of course, there is always the very real risk that the company you build could implode, and your ownership could be worth about as much as a vintage pet rock. This is the chance a person takes in a life of entrepreneurship- you might experience the dreaded epic fail, or you may soar to a level most people will never even come close to experiencing. The risks are worth it to some people, but not to others. You have to decide some things for yourself.

This isn’t an editorial against the future of the automotive industry. On the contrary, everyone knows the industry is on an upswing. When is it not? Cars have always prospered and evolved to something better starting with the Model T. By no means is this about a negative aspect.

Rather, this “silent death” is about something totally unexpected. The benefits of ‘traffic noise’. Seriously. You laugh and cringe and don’t even understand one bit, but believe it or not ‘traffic noise’ is now a serious commodity to the well-being, nay, LIFE of any human alive in this world. Why?

Take a look at hybrids and the way they work, and you’ll understand. Authorities in the industry call them EVs (electric vehicles). Ever heard a lamp make a sound when you turn it on? No. How about a smartphone? (mind the natural key notes and ringtones, of course) Absolutely not. The bottom line is electric runs SILENT. So imagine this:

You’re walking down a road, and you see no cars. You HEAR no cars. So you take your first few steps. From behind, an EV races toward you; but hear NOTHING. Then you’re smashed right back into the sidewalk with two broken arms, a cracked skull, and this one thought racing through your damaged head…. “Why didn’t I hear anything?”

That’s the concern floating around the automotive industry’s head. There’s now a development revolving around hybrid automobiles that they require a “warning sound” to alert other drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, etc etc.. And spanning a wider debate is what that “warning sound” should be.

Thankfully, though, this allows manufacturers more creativity as they design their vehicles with any sounds they want. But again the question is this: would the sounds alert people of oncoming traffic? Do we really want a city filled with electronic giggles, ringtones, classical music tracks, or even popcorn popping? Who knows.

Only the future will tell!

Business has had a particular look and feel for generations, going back to long before the times when people set up shoe shining booths on every street corner to polish the shoes of well-to-do people. It has typically involved providing a good or a service to an end user with the expectation of a reasonable profit. While that same premise still holds true “ very few people begin a business proposition to lose money (although there are a few who do this) “ the look of businesses has changed in recent years.

During the 1990′s, it became essential for any business with a brick storefront to build an internet presence to remain viable and stay in the consumer’s eye. Since that time, the consumer has proven that the effort was worthwhile for the business owner internet sales have taken off for most businesses, while tiny shops with no internet presence have languished.

The businessperson of the third millennium has easier options than were available only a decade or two ago. No longer is it required that a new business concept have a storefront. With a clever domain name which represents the business fully, the entrepreneur of today can open up shop by opening up a website and selling their product or service there.

Not only can businesses become more well known with an internet presence they can also function better behind the scenes with technology. Companies like Netsuite have the software available for business owners to control spending, orders, marketing funds, and payroll increases without even stepping foot in a bank or in their business. Businesses with a virtual store front presence and a the necessary software have proven to survive past the first year.

As business plans go, this route looks good to a lot of people interested in starting up their own company. Overhead is pretty low, as it takes only a few dedicated employees to keep a medium sized website up and running. ‘Store hours’ are simply 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, as the servers which maintain the data never need either a rest day nor a sick day. Orders can flow into the site at the convenience of the shopper, regardless of the time zone that they find themselves in at the moment. These in mind, an internet based business can maximize profits as compared to an actul store.

You have come up with a new business idea and you are ready to get things started. You don’t have a lot of money to invest in advertising, but you know you have to get your business out there. Try using a blog to advertise your company and tell people what your services are about.
A blog is usually free and easily accessible via search engines. This is something you can do yourself. That way you are sure you are saying things right and you control when and how often entries go out. There are a few things to keep in mind when you write your blog content.
The first thing you want your blog to do is tell people what your company is all about. You want to communicate the level of service you provide, you can set the tone for your company with the words you use and you can highlight the differences between you and your competitors. If you are marketing something revolutionary or new and you are afraid people will be skeptical or not understand, use your blog to explain your product to the public.
You also need to monitor how often you publish your entries. You want it to be consistent with your publishing frequency and your tone. This will show the readers that you know what you are about and they can count on you. Also, if you publish consistently they know that you keep your word. Small things like this might seem unimportant, but put yourself in the shoes of your target audience. What would you be looking for from a new company? Go to a few websites and see what draws your eye and what things they do that you like. Is it consistency of tone, updated material and clear and concise explanation of services? If it is, then those are the things you want to duplicate on your blog.

With the recession on the wane, many companies are getting their figurative feet back under them and starting once again to think about growth. While layoffs and encouraged retirements are barely in the past, many hiring managers are leery to consider expanding their talent pool at this juncture. On the other hand, those employees who have survived the labor cuts are growing weary with the extra work and responsibilities handed to them. A great solution to this dilemma lies in contracting for temporary employees.

Having a temporary employee used to mean just a girl to help with the filing or answering the phones. Today’s temporary employee is ever so much more than that stereotype. For one thing, many temporary employees are established professionals who choose to contract rather than work for just one company. Also, more men are now working for temporary agencies than ever. Finally, agencies are able to provide not just receptionists and administrative assistants, but professionals trained in accounting, logistics, information technology, operations and many other office functions. If your company has an open position to fill, you can probably find an agency that specializes in that department or function.

There are several benefits to choosing to rely on temporary employees. Even though the billed hourly rate may seem high, there are no employment taxes associated with them. In addition, businesses do not need to budget for the holiday pay, sick leave or health insurance benefits of temporaries. Finally, temporary employees can be contracted for a duration of a few days, weeks, months–or even indefinitely. One other benefit to using temporary employees is that it allows the employee and the company both to try one another out. There is no long commitment, and if the temporary employee isn’t a good for fit, you can simply request a different employee next time.

Technology has developed in such a way it provides many cost effective avenues to develop a profitable business. For those that are starting a business or need to increase their customer base, there are many new tools available.

A small business start-up may sound like a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. If you are considering starting your own small business, make sure to research the fine print and legal work before committing. Besides working on your project plan, a possible website, marketing, and more business-related tasks, you will need to watch out for licenses, permits, capital gains tracking, tax deductions, and international trade guidelines. Here is a brief overview of some of the licenses, permits, and legal documents that you will need to research when you start up your business.

It is important to have enough start-up capital when you venture out on a new business. Insufficient funds are the single most debilitating factor for many would-be small business owners. If you do not have the liquid assets, consider a bank or government loan, or ask a family member or close friend for a loan. If you borrow from a friend or family, try to keep the transactions as business-like as possible, by drafting a legal document that states how much you will be borrowing, at what interest rate, for what purposes, re-payment plans, and then give a copy to the lender as well as to a third-party witness. Another funds option would be non-profit or government grants. If you have some skill in grant writing, or a flair for persuasive writing, then you might have a chance in winning a grant or two, which could go a long way in defraying your start-up costs.

Although starting your own business can seem daunting, there are actually several helpful government affiliated websites that include user-friendly resources and tips to help you keep your advertising campaigns, employee hiring and management tactics, intellectual property rights, and other legal matters up to code. A business mentor or legal advisor can also be an invaluable resource as you try to navigate the waters of starting your own business.

If you are thinking about opening a new business, especially with the economy the way it currently is, there are several different things you need to think about. Many of these ideas will help save you money, or perhaps keep you from investing in a business that will wind up being a time or money sink in the long run.

First, before you sign a lease, have the location inspected. Most people do this when they are purchasing a home but don’t think about it when leasing a building location, even though this can be just as much of a long term commitment. I learned this lesson the hard way when I opened a business years ago and later found the building to be infested with termites that would swarm and invade my store. Although I was able to get out of my contract because of the termite problem, I still had to go through the hassle of moving and likely lost business because of customers who did not find me in my new location.

Another thing you need to research before opening a business has to do with local laws and statutes. I know of one small town that would not allow someone to open a store selling used books, DVDs and CDs because of the scare of pornography. The business owner did not intend to sell pornographic materials, but the town had allowed a video store in before that wound up having a “back room” that rented X-rated videos and the town had to spend thousands of dollars to get the store to remove the X-rated section. So, to avoid any hassles like this, they simply rejected the business permit request of this bookstore. Unfortunately, the prospective business owner had already purchased inventory and secured a lease before they found this out.

The general concept of majority rule is rubbing off on CalPERS. According to the Los Angeles Times, the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is moving to change the way that it elects directors of companies. Instead of having a select few decide who should rule over many, CalPERS is voting to have the decision left up to the shareholders of companies. Under the new system, those who have invested money into the company will have the opportunity to vote for the individual they believe to be best suited for the job of director. The candidate receiving the most shareholder votes will receive the position of director, which places complete control of the selection process in the hands of investors and not board members.

In past times, directors were selected by a plurality system. Under such system, board member would review candidates and select the individual that they viewed as most fitting with a simple “yes” vote. Even when shareholders chose to withhold their voting privileges, board members made certain that the selection process moved forward. While the prior system allowed a director to be chosen rapidly, it completely excluded the shareholder from such process. In all frankness, if someone is willing to invest resources into a company, then he or she should have influence over who is selected to run the company within the capacity of a director. The new majority system will allow shareholders to exercise their rights as investors and ultimately improve relationship ties between shareholders and directors.

While 20 of 58 companies under CalPERS, including Apple, have opted in favor of the majority system, 34 companies are still not convinced of the benefits that the new method will bring. Such companies will probably jump on board in the near future after viewing the success of other companies that have adopted the new way.
